About Melbourne in July (including weather)

July in Melbourne is winter. At the MelbourneAustralia web site there’s lots of useful information. This is what they say about our weather: “The windiest time of the year in Melbourne begins in July. There may be several days in succession of strong, cold north to northwest winds, often with cloud and some light rain. The weather is frequently cold and cloudy. The few days of calm sunny weather are accompanied by cold nights with frost or fog. Fog usually forms late in the evening and clears by mid-morning, but occasionally persists for the whole day during July. There are usually a few very cold days with strong southerly winds and showers, light snow may fall on the hills within 35 km of the city centre.  The year’s coldest day, with a maximum temperature of about 9ºC, usually occurs during July. Some rain falls on an average of one day in two; on some of these days there may be only a little drizzle or a light shower. The highest number of wet days in any one-month in the city is twenty-seven, in August 1939. However, heavy rain is rare at this time of the year.”

So bring something warm to wear, and maybe an umbrella.

From the airport

Melbourne has one international airport (Tullamarine) and two domestic airports (Tullamarine and Avalon).

From Tullamarine there are taxis and buses to central Melbourne. A taxi costs about $45 – $50 one way and takes about 20 – 30 minutes. The SkyBus also takes you from the airport to Southern Cross Station. The cost is $16 one way and the bus leaves every 10 minutes. The SkyBus also takes about 20 – 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

From Avalon there are also taxis. The trip will cost you about $70 and take about 50 – 60 minutes. There’s also a SunBus that costs $20 and takes about 50 minutes from Avalon to Southern Cross Station.

  1. Hi again – the hotel tells me that the conference rate is Aus$190 including one breakfast in the Deluxe Courtyard Queen Room (1 x Queen Size bed). They can also do this room as a Twin (2 x single beds) at the rate of $209 including two breakfasts. So I’m thinking of booking the twin room – does anyone want to share it and split the cost with me? I plan to stay there for 3 nights: July 11, 12 and 13 (but if you want to stay for only two of those nights, that’s fine).
